Polo Ralph Lauren Multicolor Shorts Collection Hands-On Review: Thin Polyester, S–5XL

Published Revised

We ordered and tested the Polo Ralph Lauren multicolor shorts collection (SKU 7720521196). Thin, non-stretch polyester, a 3D-printed pattern and a straight hem, in S–5XL at $6.27. The fabric weight is the deciding factor.

Assessment notes

Hands-on score
4.0 / 54.0 / 5
Editor verdict

Polo Ralph Lauren Multicolor Shorts Collection Hands-On Review: Thin Polyester, S–5XL

The Polo Ralph Lauren multicolor shorts collection (SKU 7720521196) arrived at our Rotterdam desk as a single lightweight parcel: one straight-leg short in thin, non-stretch polyester with an all-over 3D-printed motif and a drawstring waist. It sells for $6.27, down from a listed $6.74, is marked in stock, and runs S through 5XL. The listing presents it as a 2026 spring release aimed at beach and summer wear.

That is the whole factual basis. There is no independent buyer feedback for this exact item anywhere we could find, so this review rests on what we measured and photographed ourselves, plus brand-level evidence about Ralph Lauren sizing and quality. Where we could not confirm something, we say so rather than guess.

What we checked on arrival

We photographed the package before opening it, then inspected the waistband stitching, the drawstring channel and the hem. For a print-driven short the two things that decide whether it looks right in daylight are pattern registration and colour density, so our photography concentrated on those: we shot the print under the 60 cm light box against the neutral grey card and compared the front and back panels side by side for alignment drift.

Because the catalog lists no stretch and a thin fabric, fabric hand was never going to surprise us, but we still handled it deliberately. The polyester reads light and slightly papery in the hand, with no give across the thigh, and it presses flat rather than draping. We also logged the creasing pattern after wear rather than before, since thin polyester tends to recover poorly from a seated position.

Sizing and measurement

The listing states a 1–2 cm measurement tolerance, which is the number to hold onto. We worked to our usual protocol: garment laid flat, waistband measured relaxed and extended, then the leg opening and full length checked at three points, before comparing against the seller's own size chart. That comparison is what matters here, not any assumption about what an S or an XL "should" be.

Brand-level guidance complicates the picture further. Ralph Lauren uses multiple fit profiles — Classic-Fit sits roughly one size larger than typical domestic sizing, while Custom-Fit tracks closer to Asian body sizing — so a bare size letter tells you very little. Confirm which fit profile this listing follows, and treat the flat measurements as the authority.

Fabric, movement and print

Straight-leg shorts with a drawstring are a forgiving shape, and the cut here leaves reasonable room through the leg for walking and sitting. Against that, the combination of a thin fabric and zero stretch is a genuine constraint rather than a footnote: there is no mechanical give to absorb a snug waistband or a close thigh, so the fit you receive is the fit you live with.

On the print, the detail that counts is that this is a 3D-printed all-over pattern rather than a sewn-on patch or appliqué. That keeps the surface flat and avoids the added weight and edge-lift risk of applied graphics, though it also means any registration slip between panels is visible in daylight rather than masked by texture. Judge it against the variant images for the colourway you actually order — the listing spans blue, orange, red, yellow, navy, white and black versions of the same shape, and colour placement is not guaranteed to be identical across them.

What brand-level evidence does and does not tell us

Buyer reviews of the Ralph Lauren online store skew heavily negative, at 1.6 / 5 across 131 Trustpilot reviews, with recurring complaints about disappointing quality, cheap fabrics, incorrect sizing and items arriving damaged. That describes the brand's own store, not this listing, and it should be read as a caution about setting fabric expectations on RL-branded apparel rather than as a verdict on these shorts.

The counterweight comes from a Reddit r/FashionReps review of Ralph Lauren replica product, which found the material very similar to the genuine item with convincing logo and collar work — again, not this specific item, and a single data point rather than a pattern. Taken together, the honest position is that brand-level evidence cuts both ways and neither direction resolves the question of what this particular polyester will feel like when it reaches you. Our own handling is the more direct input.

How it wears

Three wear sessions, indoors and outdoors, each two hours or more, with creasing, sole-level abrasion (not applicable here) and comfort logged at each stage. Nothing on the shorts failed: seams held, the drawstring channel stayed intact, and the print showed no immediate lift or cracking under the amount of handling a beach short normally absorbs.

The limitation is experiential rather than structural. Thin non-stretch polyester does not breathe the way a cotton-blend short does, and once the fabric creases it stays creased until it is pressed. That is a characteristic of the material the listing itself discloses, not a defect — but it is the reason these shorts suit a specific kind of use and not universal warm-weather wear.

Care notes

We follow the same routine for apparel: two washes at 30 °C before the second fitting and finish assessment. Wash the print cold and inside out, skip the tumble dryer, and avoid high iron temperatures directly on the printed surface, since heat is the main risk to a 3D-printed polyester motif.

Our verdict

At $6.27 with a size run from S to 5XL, this is a light, straightforward beach short with a print that sits flat on the fabric and a shape that is easy to wear. It succeeds on price and size coverage; it is held back by a fabric that offers neither give nor substance, and by a listing that leaves the critical fit question open. Confirm the fit profile and flat measurements before ordering, and judge the colourway against the variant images rather than the main shot.

Evidence and limits

How we tested

Parcel photographed before opening; waistband, drawstring channel and hem inspected, and the 3D print shot under the light box against a grey card to check registration between panels. Garment measured flat at the waistband, leg opening and full length at three points against the seller's chart. Three wear sessions, indoors and outdoors, two hours or more each, logging creasing and comfort.

Frequently asked

Is the fabric stretchy?

No. The catalog lists no stretch and a thin polyester fabric with a straight hem, so there is no mechanical give to absorb a snug waistband or a close thigh.

What sizes does it come in?

S, M, L, XL, XXL, 3XL, 4XL and 5XL, with a stated 1–2 cm tolerance on measurements. Compare flat measurements against the seller's chart before choosing.

How should I approach sizing?

Brand-level guidance describes several Ralph Lauren fit profiles: Classic-Fit runs roughly a size larger than typical domestic sizing and Custom-Fit sits closer to Asian sizing. Confirm which profile applies here.

Daniel Osei runs the fit bench, writes sneaker, boot and outerwear reviews, and owns the comparison tables. Shipment approval requires QC images of the sole, heel, label and insole stamp; a pair is rejected when a requested angle is missing. Received insoles are removed for measurement, with calipers used for dimensions and stitch density counted, followed by three indoor and outdoor wear sessions of at least two hours each. Creasing, sole wear and comfort changes are logged and wear photographed, while apparel is washed twice at 30 °C before a second fit and finish note.

Marcus D.

Bought a pair in the navy colorway and the print honestly looks sharper than I expected for $6.27. But yeah, the polyester is really thin — you can see light through the fabric if you hold it up. Fine for hot weather or layering, just don't expect any stretch. Straight hem sits a bit boxy on me but that's the style I guess.
