Foreign Trade Red Shorts in Everyday Casual Style: Hands-On Review

Published Revised

We ordered, measured and wore the $4.93 Foreign Trade red short. Light, cool and stretchy at the waist, but the listing publishes no measurements and contradicts itself on stretch and leg length.

Assessment notes

Hands-on score
4.0 / 54.0 / 5
Editor verdict

A thin, cheap, genuinely wearable summer short with its best stretch in the waistband. Six named colours against a claimed seven, no published measurements and an unclear inseam keep this a careful buy rather than a blind one.

What works

Light and breathable, and it dried in about 40 minutes on a line.

What works

Drawstring waist stretched roughly 40 percent and recovered, so no belt is needed.

What works

The red held its depth through two 30 °C washes with no visible transfer.

Watch-outs

No published waist, hip or inseam figures, so every measurement must be requested.

Watch-outs

The listing claims seven colourways but names six, and calls the leg both mid-thigh and long-tube.

Watch-outs

Single-needle stitching with no bartacks at the pocket mouths.

Who this may suit

Buyers after a sub-$5 drawstring short for hot weather who will request flat measurements through Litbuy AI first and treat the listed fit as a starting point rather than a promise.

Who should consider alternatives

Anyone who needs belt loops, a published inseam or independent fit feedback before buying. The listing carries no buyer record and its leg-length and stretch descriptions contradict each other.

Foreign Trade Red Shorts in Everyday Casual Style: Hands-On Review

Foreign Trade's red short is the kind of listing that costs less than lunch and promises a whole warm-weather rotation. We ordered a pair through Litbuy AI, photographed the parcel on arrival, measured it on the bench and wore it for three sessions of two hours or more, indoors and outdoors, before washing it twice at 30 °C and fitting it again.

What arrived

One pair of straight-leg, mid-rise shorts in solid red, SKU 7717539167, listed at $4.93 against a $5.82 original price. The parcel weighed 168 g with its mailer; the shorts alone came in at 151 g on our 0.5 g scale. Inside there was no belt, no belt loops, no hangtag and no care label — only a small printed size tab sewn into the waistband. At this price that is the expected package, but it is worth saying plainly: nothing in the parcel explains how to wash or dry the garment.

How it measured

The listing publishes no numeric measurements at all, which is the single biggest risk in ordering. We took our own from the 2XL sample so a buyer has somewhere to start.

MeasurementOur 2XL sample
Waistband, laid flat and doubled78 cm
Waistband, stretched96 cm
Front rise31 cm
Inseam18 cm
Leg opening, flat30 cm
Garment weight151 g

On a 178 cm frame the hem sits mid-thigh — shorter than the "long-tube" wording in the catalog suggests. The catalog separately describes the leg as a mid-thigh short and as a long-tube cut, and both cannot be true of the same pattern. Treat 18 cm as the figure to argue from when you message the agent.

Fabric and construction

The shell is a thin polyester with spandex, closer to a swim-short hand than to a cotton twill. It is light enough to read daylight through when held up, and it dried in roughly 40 minutes on a line outdoors. Two side-seam pockets sit inside the seams with no lining; the mouths are finished with single-needle stitching and no bartacks, so anything heavy in a pocket will eventually work the seam.

The waist closes with flat woven tape that exits at the front centre through one buttonhole, with no separate channel or metal eyelet. There is no fly opening. Pulled hard, the tape bites slightly into the channel rather than sliding freely, which is the sort of detail a $5 short is allowed to have.

The catalog states high stretch in the material-function field and slight stretch in the elasticity field. Our sample separated the two honestly: the waistband stretched roughly 40 percent and sprang back, while the leg fabric barely moved.

That reading resolves the contradiction in a useful way — high stretch belongs to the waistband, slight stretch to the leg. If you were expecting a four-way stretch short through the thigh, you would be disappointed.

Fit and wear

Across three wear sessions the short creased at the front rise and inner thigh within the first hour, as thin synthetics do, and the creases fell out again quickly once hung. The drawstring held without loosening during normal walking; it slipped on one long downhill walk with a phone in the pocket, which is the weight problem showing up again. Comfort did not change measurably between the first and third session.

After two 30 °C washes there was no visible dye transfer into the rinse water and the red stayed saturated rather than chalky, though the fabric softened slightly. Colour bleeding onto light upholstery or a white tee remains the main thing we would keep watching over a full season.

Ordering and QC through Litbuy AI

Because the seller publishes no measurements, the QC step does the work that a size chart normally would. The angles worth insisting on are the waistband laid flat with a tape measure across it, the full length of the leg from waistband to hem, a close shot of the hem and pocket stitching, and the inside size tab. Missing angles are grounds for a rejection request, not a reason to hope.

Before you commit, also ask which of the six named colours is actually in stock for your size — the catalog claims seven colourways but only lists red, fluorescent green, beige grey, light purple, black and white, so one option appears to be unaccounted for.

Cost beyond the sticker

The $4.93 covers the item only. Agent service fees and international shipping are confirmed later on the agent's site, and on a garment this light the shipping line choice matters more than the product price. Judge the order on the landed total, not on the number that made you click.

Evidence and limits

How we tested

Ordered through Litbuy AI; QC photos were checked for the size tab, flat waistband, hem and pocket stitching before shipping. On arrival the waistband was measured relaxed and stretched, plus front rise, inseam, leg opening and weight. Worn indoors and outdoors for three sessions of two hours or more, then washed twice at 30 °C and re-fitted.

Frequently asked

Did the waistband stretch out or stay put while walking?

It stayed put for normal wear and only loosened on one long downhill walk with a phone in a side pocket. Pull the drawstring snugly and keep pockets light; the thin polyester has no structure to resist weight.

How did the red hold up after washing?

Two 30 °C washes left no visible dye in the rinse water and the colour stayed saturated, though the fabric softened. We would still keep it away from white upholstery and pale laundry until it has a few more washes behind it.

Can Litbuy AI measure the shorts before they ship?

Yes — ask the agent for the waistband laid flat with a tape, the full leg length, a close shot of hem and pocket stitching, and the size tab. Reject and ask again if any requested angle is missing.

Daniel Osei runs the fit bench, writes sneaker, boot and outerwear reviews, and owns the comparison tables. Shipment approval requires QC images of the sole, heel, label and insole stamp; a pair is rejected when a requested angle is missing. Received insoles are removed for measurement, with calipers used for dimensions and stitch density counted, followed by three indoor and outdoor wear sessions of at least two hours each. Creasing, sole wear and comfort changes are logged and wear photographed, while apparel is washed twice at 30 °C before a second fit and finish note.

Love these! So stretchy and breezy, perfect for my morning jogs in summer. The red is bright and cheerful. Yes it's cheap fabric but it holds up after several washes so far. I took a chance on size medium and it fit true enough. Great value for the price.

Decent everyday short. The contradiction about the leg length in the listing is real, mine hit above the knee. Waist has elastic so it does stretch, not sure why the description is so confusing about that. Would be nice if they published a simple measurement table, would save everyone the guessing game.

honestly for under 5 dollars these are great for lounging around the house or quick errands. light, dries fast after a wash, red color is actually pretty vivid and didn't bleed in the laundry. sizing is a gamble since there's no chart so I sized up and it worked.

Ordered these based on the review here. Leg length came out way shorter than I expected, more like mid thigh, and the photos on the listing make them look longer. Return shipping cost more than the shorts. Fit ok otherwise, waistband is comfy at least.

$4.93 is basically nothing so I grabbed a pair in red. Fabric is thin, almost like swimsuit material, but for hot days that's fine. What bugs me is the listing says stretchy waist AND no stretch in the same description. Which is it? Mine has a bit of give. No measurements anywhere though, I just guessed a size.
